"Winter Diamond" (冬のダイヤモンド, Fuyu no Daiyamondo) is the eighth episode of the Asteroid in Love anime.

Ino decides to challenge herself by participating in the Earth Science Olympiad. It's her first real step forward as their club president. As their second semester comes to an end, the club celebrates Christmas and New Year's together around a warm hot pot followed by star gazing. Yet as they're excitedly looking up at the winter diamond, Ao suddenly begins to cry. She says everything's all right, but...

While meeting Mira and Ao in the club room, Sakura learned that Ino had registered to participate in the Global Science Olympiad, an annual competition for middle and high school students, and candidates must Only after passing the preliminary and final rounds are selected to compete internationally.
On Sunday of the preliminary round, Ino set off to the competition venue, feeling excited but also nervous. At the exam site, she meets another student named Saeki. This is Ino's first participation, while Saeki reached the final round in the previous competition. However, Saeki also advised Ino to be more open to the contestants she considers 'rivals', because in the end, everyone shares the same love for Earth Science. With a more relaxed mood, Ino and the other candidates began taking the exam.
Ino seemed to have opened her eyes to the world after taking the exam. Even though she graded her own papers and knew her score was a bit bad, she also had a lot of fun knowing that there were many people out there like the club members. Seeing Ino's progress, Monroe also felt excited and decided to try the entrance exam again. Ino then showed Mira and Ao a photo of her with fellow contestant Saeki, and the difference between Saeki's and Ino's photos was clear to see.
Mira and Ino went to the club room first to prepare for the Christmas party the other day, and had to find a way not to use the induction cooker and heating air conditioner at the same time. They asked Ao's opinion over the phone, and she suggested bringing a warm blanket instead of air conditioning, as well as making the hot pot warmer. After a while, the whole club had arrived. Mira and Ino started trying the hot pot and found it extremely spicy, because Ao had put most of the chili powder in the pot. But Monroe and Sakura can enjoy it normally, but Ms. Endou cannot.
After the meal, the group went out to the balcony to watch the large hexagonal constellation formed in the sky, also known as the Winter Diamonds. At that moment, Monroe and Sakura gave their juniors an album containing photos, moments, and memories of the whole club together. Just seeing Mira's smile in the corner of that group photo made Ao feel like she was about to burst into tears. Ao consoled everyone that she was just having too much fun, but Ino began to suspect something was wrong.
The first three days of the new year have passed, and that morning. Mira, Ao and Ino went to the temple together. There are many interesting things they can do at the temple, but the first thing is to pray for a smooth and satisfactory new year. Ino turned to Ao and saw that her mood was a bit sad. She called everyone to the back of the temple to talk privately. Here, Ao revealed that her father had to move for work during the upcoming spring break, which meant she had to move somewhere else. Hearing that, Mira burst into tears and refused to accept that her and Ao's promise might not come true. Ino advises Mira to stay calm and find out how she can help Ao.
The next day, the Earth Science Club convened an emergency meeting, and invited two familiar members of the Journalism Club to propose many ideas to keep Mira and Ao's dream alive. Even Suzu came and proposed to take Ao with her far away. Even so, the only possible way they could think of was to do research in different places through remote communication. At this point, Misa came to the club room and advised Ao that she should tell her relatives about her wishes and stand up for them. Mira's sister also brought along a proposal: because next school year, Misa will have to move to live alone at a university quite far away, so Ao will be able to stay in her room, or in other words, Mira and Ao will live in the same house.
